This weekend, I ventured out on a very exciting anthropological excursion to the New York Comic Con. There were far fewer Juggaloes and skinheads than there were at Cinema Wasteland, but if you substituted Spiderman for Juggaloes and "Star Wars" Storm Troopers for skinheads, and then multiplied the scale by about a hundred, you'd... well, you'd be almost entirely off the mark, so scratch that comparison. This thing was about six times larger than any other convention I've been to, and way more "upscale." I felt a mighty need for a costume, too.Comic book fans drink a lot less than horror fans, even though there was a giant bottle of Wild Turkey displayed at "Yaoi Land." Sobriety issues aside, I got to see some pretty nifty previews of upcoming plastic action figure joy. I think I'm going to have to own "The Warriors" figures from Mezco Toys. Stuntman Mike would be able to keep Snake Plissken company, so I should probably buy that as well. A little judicious planning would make room for two "Conan the Barbarian" figures.
The panels were extremely well-attended--I waited in line for an hour and a quarter to ensure a seat in the "Venture Brothers" panel. It was well worth the time and effort, though, as we were treated to this preview of Season Three (posted to YouTube by another attendee):
I really think the love for "Venture Brothers" was underestimated--there were probably at least 1,000 people in that particular panel, which had to be moved to a larger room. The panel was not moderated, which led to some rather dumbtarded questions and one request for hugs (plenty of eyerolling from the Tenebrous Posse ensued, trust me--if you want the full effect you can find the clips on YouTube), with the main skinny being that Season Four is currently being written, there are no current plans for a feature length movie or a video game, and there will be a soundtrack CD being released soon.
Today I am really feeling the absence of Storm Troopers. It's kind of sad, actually.

one request for hugs
I saw on the FangoCon website that "requests for hugs" during panels was severely frowned upon, and I remember thinking "Really?? People DO that? That's...sort of pathetic and humiliating...Can't they just wait till the panelists get really drunk in the bar afterwards?"
But alas, apparently it actually does happen. *sigh*
That's a fine picture of you with the Stormtroopers, BTW. Strangely, you seem to fit in, despite your lack of white glossy Teflon plating.
Believe me, the "hugs" thing was Severely Frowned Upon by myself and those sitting around me.
Although, this does mean our hopes of hugging Michele Soavi during the panel in June are CRUSHED. Damn. Let's just hope the "dessert event" that night goes well :P

Thank you! It's almost as if I planned wearing that shirt just to photograph well next to Storm Troopers. I promise I didn't do that--I actually chose the shirt because it looked kind of like a Crepax drawing. Notably, there was VERY little Euro stuff available at the con (my wallet is relieved).
What a really cool picture. I've always been a big fan of the Stormtroopers. I thought it would have been cool to be one. I don't keep up with comics like I once did, but this is pretty interesting. I've been considering trying to get back into the world of comics.
Thanks! Those guys were standing right in the entrance of the con, so I leapt in for my photo op. They were really sweet and were clearly having a great time! That enthusiasm was contagious and carried through the whole event.
Confession: I'm painfully ill-informed about comics. I dabble in some cross-over stuff as it applies to the worlds of horror and exploitation (I dig EC Comics, fumetti, some old "Heavy Metal" issues). But otherwise, color me baffled! There were a lot of people with a serious passion for comics present and it was cool to sit back and observe.
oh wow, I can't wait for more Venture Bros.
(John Bonham, I mran Brock Samson, rules!)

Hooray for TWO more seasons of VB :D
Funny addendum: There was some amusing banter about Trianna's friend Kim--the panelists effectively cut down a question regarding Kim by firing back that the only reason anyone cares about her is because she's hot, not because she's much of a character at all.
Warriors figures?!?! Who knew? I want some!!!
Totally! I am figuring out where I can fit them unobtrusively in my office. Those are some of the more "safe for work" action figures I've wanted.
Ah, this reminds me of the rather disturbing obsession my mother used to have for Darth Vader. He would walk on the screen dressed in black leather with that mask and cape and speak in that low voice and my mother would practically start panting in front of my very confused 8-year-old self...
Theresa--I think your comment Wins This Thread...! It's the evil uniform thing, dude--irresistable, even in the undefined space-opera future.
