I love this take on the old "lady pretending to be a ghost in order to scare off unwanted guests" chestnut illustrated by John Willie. Editor of the highly influential fetish periodical "Bizarre," Willie manages to incorporate hobbling heels and bondage into the mix. I can't help but note that there are more efficient ways to outfit a banshee for chain-rattling, but you've got to give the artist credit for an innovative new way to put his damsel in distress. Diaphanous Gown Enthusiasts should be pleased as well--you know who you are, cupcakes...!

"Woo-Woo"? For a ghost? :-)
I used to get Bizarre once in a while, but it is a little open-wound heavy for my tastes.
Diaphanous gowns AND comic-book bondage? Oh, Empress, you *know* what I like. ;)
I can only assume the "fungus" referenced by the accomplice there is explained elsewhere in the story. :)
Give the man a break, Darius! Willie was too busy designing elaborate and eeevil gag devices to get the ghost sounds right ;) You're spot-on about the new "Bizarre" mag, but the "Bizarre" of the 40s and 50s was a different animal altogether, the brainchild of John Willie's personal obsessions. I've got to say that the man was the Vargas of kink.
I aim to please, Vicar :) As to the fungus, I... must confess that... I didn't really *read* the story.
Sweet Tawney Kitaen! That's cool.
Sir joey Z'one puts down his copy of THE PERILS OF SWEET TENEBROUS to add (and much too geekily):
Have some Willie at home (no surprise) but this FINE excerpt ("It is a succubus--*I* will stay!" ;D) is not inc. in the volume...DO have an original poster by Dave Stevens for the film version of PERILS OF G that is, uh, far superior to the filmed result (THAT art by DS is in "Brush With Passion" that I still haveta see, let alone buy)...hrm...SOMEWHERE is an Eric Stanton take (if not continuation) of GWENDOLINE which *i* think is inked by ES's old studio mate...STEVE DITKO O_0 Oh jah: EROTIC COMICS, Volume 2 is out now--no contributions from moi this time but worth a l00k...
Check and CHECK!
(Ghosts? Nuts!)
You do have the classic Bizarre box set from Taschen, yes?
"Bizarre" is an all-purpose title used by many different magazines. There was one in France (50s-60s) that was devoted to Surrealism and le Fantastique.
Re. John Willie, I was always fascinated that he lived briefly in my home town, Montreal, while in the process of relocating from Australia to New York.
And the winner for "best articulation of glee in comments on this post" goes to Bwana :)
Joey, liebling, precious creature--you've GOT to get your filthy mitts on the second edition of "Perils." Apparently the story that I ganked these panels from was never published previously, and it's a stunner. Definitely worthy of a place on your distinguished bookshelf. And, of course, I live in a greeeeeen state of envy due to your possession of that truly delicious "Perils" poster. WAY better than the Just Jaeckin snoozer of a flick it advertises.
Indeed I do, Joan! Loves me some Taschen--I've got publications from that house ranging from surveys of Romantic painting all the way to Eric Kroll's fetish photography. Equal opportunity visual stimulation ahoy!
Pierre, I'd LOVE to see the French publication--I didn't know it even existed!
It's been a bit of a rough ride for Tawney the past 15 years or so. What with the cocaine, OJ (the murderous running back, not the delicious beverage) and some domestic violence. I liked GWENDOLYN when it came out but I was twenty and in need of entertainment. Like now, except for the 25 yea rdifference. It wasn't a bad looking film though. Brent Huff was okay,
Kate, I blogged about the French Bizarre. The post includes links to covers of the magazine (and of Midi Minuit Fantastique as well):

Enjoy!
The sequence cracks me up ! not for the fetish-y content but because the characters come across as somewhat naughty Scooby-Doo villans!
It's John Willie's fault that I own heels that high (among other things). I love the expressions on all the menfolk in that sequence.
Pierre--awesome stuff as always! I'm really enjoying those "Bizarre" scans. One MORE paper-ephemera item to add to my ever-expanding "Needful Things List."
Hee hee, Jake! The effect of the sexy lady ghost might be somewhat lessened by a goofy rubber mask, though--I salute that artistic choice on Willie's part ;)
I am reading you loud & clear on the Fabulous Footwear Front, Doc M. Holla.
