Happy Cinco de Mayo - "El Baron del Terror"

Happy Cinco de Mayo, interpals!  Enjoy "El Baron del Terror" nee "The Brainiac," a fave Mexihorror flick of mine:

It's got a brain-sucking monster, witchcraft, comets, and the grotesque overuse of papier mache special effects.  You're welcome  :)  And for those fellow aficionados of Mexploitation, please to note the presence of the EVER-awesome Abel Salazar, who played the titular blood-drinker in "The Vampire" and "The Vampire's Coffin."  ETA: Or didn't--he was the GOOD GUY in those movies, Dr. Saldavar. Thanks, Prof. Grewbeard, for keepin' me honest!  Extra bonus points for the application of the word TORMENT approximately four thousand times in the English-dubbed dialogue.

And--here's a free note to any future Inquisitors--ALWAYS tear the tongue out BEFORE your victim can bring down the hexin' mojo on your descendants.  It's really a vital step in the torture and condemnation process.  Just sayin'.

though Abel Salazar portrays the noble Baron, 'twas German Robles played the Count in The Vampire & Vampire's Coffin. Abel did appear in those films though, as the Good Guy. The Brainiac is probably my favorite Mexican horror film, along with The Bloody Vampire...

Ya know, I oughta take my own "do not blog while distracted" advice, Prof! I gotta correct that :S But yeah, "Brainiac" is made entirely of love and awesome, innit?

The Brainiac is surely one of the most distinctive looking monsters of its or any era, and I love the cupboard full of brains the Baron keeps on hand for a quick snack. I admit though that the latter half of the movie bored me a bit, but you can't argue with all the love the movie gets.

Your point on "Curses from the Pyre" prevention is well-taken, but no one ever seems to think of it till it's too late. I guess since the curse is usually to be brought down some hundreds of years in the future on descendants not yet born, the sense of urgency just isn't there for the inquisitors doing the deed. Yeah, thanks a ton, great-grandad. :)

Comment verification: "roidards." Retards on roids? Redundancy? :P

actually, what i should have said is that The Brainiac is one of my favorite films of ANY kind EVER...

now can you imagine Paul Naschy in the remake?...

I love the dish of brains the Baron leaves in his sideboard for those quick little "I need some cerebellum nosh to tide me over until dinner time" moods. Truly one of the finest examples of Mexi-horror, and I will tip my Negro Modelo in tribute to an excellent little post.

Some seriously fun brain-sucking in The Brainiac. Loads of fun.

I'm surprised you're not more enthused over this movie, Vicar! It seems like it'd be right up your alley what with the monsters and the general ridiculousness and stuff. But you clearly have an *appreciation* for my love of the Brainiac, so I can't fault ya, sir ;)

Prof. Grewbeard--the Vicar and the Duke just got palpitations at the mere mention of his Naschiness. And yeah--I'm TOTALLY picturing that and LOVING it!

Fred--hear hear! But make mine a Dos Equis. Or better yet--just a tumbler of Patron.

Glad I could share the love, Doc M! The Brainiac pretty much rules.

I'm a few day's late but: ARIBA!

Love this flick, I was so happy a few years ago when they came out with a decent DVD edition of it. Too bad CasaNegra Entertainment isn't around anymore.

Adam, I TOTALLY agree with you on the CasaNegra tip. Those are some outstanding DVD releases!
